Czech institute registers 128 new HIV positive since January
Prague – Tests have revealed 128 cases of HIV-positive persons in the Czech Republic since January and that total number of those infected has been 1315, Hana Zakoucka, from the State Health Care Institute (SZU), told journalists today.
Last year, 148 people were found HIV-positive, according to SZU data. AIDS developed from infection with HIV virus in 29 persons.
A total of 152 people have died of AIDS in the 10-million Czech Republic since 1986. The number of Czech AIDS patients has been 284.
Annually several people die of AIDS in the country. This year AIDS has claimed 10 lives.
Most people get infected in sexual intercourse. Apart from 1315 persons based in the Czech Republic, 322 foreigners who stayed in the country only temporarily have been tested HIV positive since the mid-1980s. However, the real figure is estimated to be ten times higher.
Though the number of HIV positive cases has been rising in the Czech Republic, state subsidies for HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment have been constantly declining for several years, experts complain. (source: ceskenoviny.cz)
Albanian HIV-positive dentist detained in Prague
... Last October, "the Prague sanitary office ordered him not to perform any activities in his field as blood tests proved the presence of the HIV virus," Dudova said.
Jiri Pekarek, former head of the Czech Dentists' Chamber, told CTK being HIV-positive in itself was no reason for a doctor to be banned from his work. The foreigner must have violated sanitary regulations as he could have infected his patients, Pekarek said. Any doctor must behave as if he himself or the patient were HIV-positive and must use protective devices such as gloves, a mask and single-use items, Pekarek said.
Dudova said the police had started administrative proceedings with the foreigners, aged 25, in order to have him expelled. (source: sportovninoviny.cz)
Number of HIV-infected Czechs is on its all-time high
... Since 1986 the total of 265 Czechs have gotten sick with AIDS ( i.e. HIV turned into AIDS) and 142 of them have already passed away. Those numbers are of course extremely low compared to other European countries such as Portugal with about 30,000 HIV-positive individuals, which is about 25-times higher than in CR. The numbers however increase if you count in the HIV-positive foreigners (304) who do not have a permanent residency in the Czech Republic, therefore cannot be counted toward the country’s total number of affected Czechs. Most of them come from Eastern Europe and Africa. As far as transmission goes, 55% of these individuals were infected via a homosexual or bisexual intercourse and 31% of them were infected heterosexually. 5% of the HIV-infected people were infected through the usage of needle.
